What a set this is! It’s also my guess that I will NEVER find all of the images for the cards as there are so many and they are very hard to find. I know that they were published over a three year period because Sid Binks only ever played four games for Huddersfield Town (scoring once), two in January 1925, two in September 1925, his last game being against Cardiff City. He then moved to Blackpool only days later on the 30th September 1925. After 55 games (and nine goals) at Bloomfield Road he joined – although he never played for – Portsmouth near the beginning of the 1927-28 season. Thus the cards MUST have been printed over the 1925-1928 period in order to encompass his presence at all three clubs (and also that of Dick Burgess – see below).
Addendum: Alan Jenkins tells us that “Dick Burgess features in the original checklist as a Queens Park Rangers. He had made a name for himself playing for Aberdare Athletic in the old Division Three South. He joined Queens Park Rangers for the 1925-26 season and it’s as a Q.P.R. player that he is listed in the checklist. This card sees him as a Dartford player, which I find strange. I’ve always listed this set as being issued between 1925 and 1927, but Burgess joined Dartford for the 1928-29 season. Not only that, he left Q.P.R. in 1927 and spent 1927-28 with Sittingbourne. So, could there be a Sittingbourne card out there waiting to be discovered?”

As a rule of thumb, players only ever appeared on two or three different backs, although I have three versions of Huddersfield Town’s Billy Smith.
In addition there some to have been some players printed using a lacquered, cream-coloured card; in October 2023 Carl Wilkes, in agreement with Gary Curtis, determined that the glossy cards formed a proof set and that there was only ever one of each of them, so each is now extremely valuable. I also believe that there is an error within this set: J. Sullivan appears for two teams, Notts County and Wigan, but it can’t be the same person because one Jim Sullivan (1904-1974) played football for Notts County between 1926 and 1928 but he never played for Wigan; a completely different Jim Sullivan (1903-1977) played for Wigan and Wales between 1921 and 1946 – but at rugby. The photo on this Barratt card is the latter player, not the association footballer.
